World Turtle Day : World Turtle Day is observed on May 23rd every year. The basic essence of the day is to bring the attention of the world to the magnificent creatures which in spite of being low-key, tend to gather quite a fascination both from children and adults alike.

History
American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) which is a nonprofit organization has been sponsoring World Turtle Day. It was founded by Susan Tellem and Marshal Thompson. As part of a mission, it has rescued over 4,000 tortoises and turtles and sent them to caring homes. ATR has stood out to be in the forefront to help confiscate endangered turtles by sharing with law enforcement. The day is an obvious celebration of events and the organization has been doing this since 2000.
Importance
It is true that turtles are eye-catching creatures which have long life, when compared with snakes, alligators, crocodiles etc. They belong to the group of reptiles which are considered to be one of the oldest groups the world has seen.
Out of over 300 species of turtles which are present across the length and breadth of the world, 129 species are considered to be endangered.
The day brings to the fore about the need for proper and favorable surroundings for the survival of tortoises right in their natural habitat.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, tortoises and turtles are endangered and vulnerable. Hence, the responsibility of the masses becomes extremely more to consider our duty and accordingly create an environment which becomes favorable for their habitat. The perception of the audience needs to be changed, as they shouldn’t just perceive turtles to be rocks with legs.
It is true that out of all the creatures which live on land, water or air, humans are the most advanced and intelligent ones and it is our responsibility to take care of them. Let’s take a pledge that on this day, we prove to give them their due share of love, comfort and care.
Although a turtle’s life is huge, it may cut short when humans make them a part of delicacies. Therefore, let’s be united and create awareness about World Turtle Day.
How people celebrate the day
The basic theme of the celebration is to create a helping hand for such silent creatures that are facing loads of challenges and concerns in today’s age. Hence, various events become a part of the celebration which highlight the concerns where remedial measures are discussed. People get a sense of their individual duty and how they can themselves play an important part in providing a better phase and future for these creatures. Likewise, as per the needs and situation they rescue them from roads and highways so that they can move to their natural habitat. Students take part in such activities in their educational institutions which even provide a bright and healthy prospect for future generations to create a positive mindset about it. Let’s now rescue them and sensitize everyone as they equally deserve a life of dignity and respect.
