What is telecommunication?

Telecommunication is the transmission of signals, words, messages, images etc and is done over a distance

History

There is a historical significance of the day as way back in the year 1965, on the same day the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris. In 2005, the World Summit on Information Society was held where the United Nations General Assembly declared 17 May as the World Information Society Day. The focus was laid on the importance which technology has to offer. The UN General Assembly in March 2006 has decided that the day will be celebrated every year. Since then it has been commemorated every year.

What is the main aim of creating the day?

The main aim and objective of celebrating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is to create awareness about the biggest possible use of the Internet along with prevalent information as well as communication technologies. This is done with an aim to enhance the use of technology and make people closer to the technology than ever before.

Don’t we know about the extent of utility which modernization and advancement of technology has resulted in? Yes, indeed. There has been a massive scale with which technology has seen improvement as it brought people closer, thanks to the use of telephones, computers and radio. It is important for information to easily travel around the globe as it relates to the extent of development in the said field. This is where the role of World Telecom Day plays its part as it is related to how information travels across the length and breadth of the world

Telecommunication advancement also relates to how reduced ‘calling’ as well as ‘internet rates’ with improved communication has resulted towards maximizing its use.

Significance

The day sensitizes others about the need and importance of communication with a prime focus laid on the increase of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Since, it is based on how information travels and carries across the world. Therefore, thanks to the advancement of communication, the Internet has become advanced where the main focus has been laid on bridging the digital divide. One of the foremost examples about how telecommunication has made our lives easier is through the use of the internet. For example, in today’s era where the internet has made it possible for people to deliver the professional necessities even from homes too. As per the need, operators have increased the speed of broadband and have systematically proved to play a pivotal role towards coping up with the challenges arising out of any pandemic.

Considering the prime example where one can clearly see and note about the crucial importance which communication has played in our lives, it is all set to become advanced.
