World Intellectual Property Day

The World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated on 26 April every year which was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000. It is celebrated to learn about the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity and also raise awareness on people of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life.

World Intellectual Property Day is also termed as World IP Day and in September 1998, a statement made at the Assembly of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization and the General Director of the National Algerian Institute for Industrial Property (INAPI) proposed on 7 April 1999 the institutionalization of an international day for intellectual property. After some months, the Chinese delegation to the WIPO proposed the adoption of the “World Intellectual Property Day” on 9 August 1999.

Later, the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) approved the idea of declaring a World Intellectual Property Day in October 1999. Then in 2000, the first event was held on World Intellectual Property Day.

WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations which is devoted to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system. WIPO is an important part on World IP Day, it handles all the activities, events and campaigns that focus on World IP Day and also demonstrate how the IP system fosters on music, arts and entertainments, as well as also all products and technological innovations.
