How is ‘Elder Abuse’ defined?

Elder abuse can be best explained or defined as a ‘single, or repeated act where the trust within relations is broken causing harm to older persons’. Hence, based on the rampant problem, it asks for the concerns of the International community to appropriately take required action. The scourge of elder abuse takes place in various developing and developed countries, yet many cases go unreported. Hence, it obviously asks for a global multifaceted response so as to protect the rights of older persons.

History

WEAAD was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization.

The main objective of the organization is to bring the communities of the world towards a common platform in sensitizing the masses about the abuse. The aim of awareness is reached through cultural, economic, social as well as demographic processes where elder abuse has become the matter of grave concern and utter neglect.

This brings the entire world to a common platform where everyone showcases their support for the urgency of steps needed so as to stop the abuse of the older generation. Unfortunately, the issue of elder abuse hasn’t been addressed in the way it should have been and hasn’t drawn the desired and required national significance.

As per the UN International Plan of Action which has categorically stated and expressed ‘elder abuse’ as something which signifies human rights violation and causes a serious issue to public health.

The matters signify even further seriousness as there is an ever increasing aging population across the world and by the year 2030, the older population is expected to be 1.4 billion. There has been a startling revelation where 4 to 6 percent of elderly suffer from a specific kind of abuse and the worst part is that they don’t come to the notice of the concerned authorities.

Hence, the day becomes a part of important criteria to sensitize the masses about the right to dignity which elders want and expect so that they can lead a life of respect.

One of the rampant abuses associated with elders relates to the financial aspect, as there have been various scams targeting seniors and it is certainly a matter of grave concern.

While there seems to be no end to the atrocities committed on the elders as there has been laxity shown by the caregivers who often lack in giving them much needed basic care in terms of nutritious food, timely medications along with safety and hygiene.
