Origin and purpose
UNESCO in 2001 adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity after a terrorist attack in 2001 which destroyed the Buddha statue of Bamyan in Afghanistan. In 2002, it adopted a resolution declaring May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
The day signifies the moment which is based towards promoting culture while showcasing about the immense and pivotal role which ‘diversity’ actually plays. It in turn creates a scenario of positivity and harmony.

In today’s world there are so many conflicts where one of the most obvious and natural mechanisms to bridge the cultural gap is by ensuring development and stability.
Cultural diversity boosts development in various areas which isn’t just limited to economic growth. It equally creates a life where there is harmony, prosperity with an improved moral and spiritual life. Therefore, cultural diversity creates a world which reduces poverty while at the same time achieve sustainable development.
The role of media is understandably immense, since in the current scenario there has been greater level of dialogues among civilizations while respecting the views of one and all. Since, the advanced use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) is directly creating a more acceptable and strengthening implementation of cultural diversity.
It is also the time where people have so many things to celebrate themselves right from tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Hence, as a result of people knowing and understanding about the cultures of one and all, it opens the way for everyone to create a dialogue while creating a mutual understanding to boost the economy as there are more interactions, exchanges and sustainable development.
On October 20th, in 2005, the UNESCO convention adopted four goals:-
- When culture diversity is attained, it signifies a greater mobility of artists along with cultural professionals
- A cultural society is based on respect and love for fellow brethren. hence, it promotes human rights along with fundamental freedom
- UNESCO encourages people of member states and societies to create conference as well as concerts with a view to emphasize on cultural diversity
- Creates favorable systems of governance so that cultures can get a boost
How do people observe the day
The world has always been buzzing with the activities where cultures and ideas have been exchanged as the cities offer the most profound example of the same. Whether it is the jam packed marketplaces or calm parks, cities have been the amalgamation of happiness, sensation, sights, experiences as well as smells from restaurants. These moments speak about positivity, hope and awesomeness for sure.
Although, pandemics does create an uneasy and challenging phase for anyone where people are confined to their homes. As a result, ‘Cultural tourist-sector’ bears the maximum brunt. However, on a positive note, when difficult times pass away, people will be more forthcoming and welcoming in their approach to have dialogues and interaction and give cultural relations further boost. This remove inequalities and create a world of peace and brotherhood.
