World Bee Day : Bees signify one of the most hardworking creatures on earth which indirectly works for the greatest and noblest causes for ‘people’, ‘plants’ and importantly the ‘environment’ as well. World Bee Day is commemorated on May 20th, annually. The day speaks about the pivotal role which bees along with other pollinators play for the ecosystem.
It seems that Mother Nature has specifically chosen ‘bees’ for increasing the production of fruits and seeds along with enhancing its quality while making them equally nutritious and tasty. This is possible due to the extreme dedication and hard work where they carry pollen from one flower to another.
Besides bees, there are birds and bats as well which has a direct affect on the increasing production of crops by 35%.
World Bee Day

History
The UN has specially allocated May 20th as World Bee Day by passing a resolution on 20 December, 2017.
Importance
A day was needed to raise awareness about the benefits and utility of pollinators. Also, the lurking dangers they are presently undergoing as well as the contribution towards sustainable development. As people become increasingly sensitized, they automatically work towards the goal which asks for stringent measures as well as measures to safeguard bees along with other pollinators. This aspect directly becomes an important mechanism towards addressing the problems concerning global food supply. It basically implies that it is going to work towards addressing the issues of hunger in developing countries in a full-fledged manner.
Significance of the Day
The Day signifies an important mechanism highlighting the role which bees along with other pollinators have contributed towards making ‘plants’ and ‘people’ healthy.
However, the cause of concern has been a significant decline in bees along with other associated creatures and pollinators. Since, they are registering increasing threats from human related activities. Hence, it is important for everyone to create a collective approach for promoting action that will safeguard and enhance pollinators along with their habitats. This will directly work in improving their strength and diversity.
Things we should know
There is a serious threat to bees as the current extinction rates are quite alarming. They are 100 to 1000 times higher than what was considered in normal surroundings and the prime reason has been the human impact. Another threatening figure relates to how approximately 35% of invertebrate pollinators such as bees and butterflies are facing a global extinction process.
There are many significant reasons which are continuously building towards its extinction process where climate change, increasing use of pesticides, changes in the way land is being currently used etc has added to the problems of bees.
Steps which we can undertake:-
- In order to create the possibility of pollen at different times of year, we need to plant diverse set of native plants
- We can buy raw honey from local farmers
- Pesticides are a death knell for the bees, so we need to avoid them as much as possible
How we can observe the day
We need to sensitize others by sharing information with masses, so as to ensure a collective approach in checking the rising extinction level.
