The World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) is an international day which is celebrated on 2nd April. It is termed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution “62/139. On 1st November 2007, World Autism Awareness Day” (WAAD) is conveyed but is abandoned on 18th of December 2007, so it was first celebrated in 2008 in order to boost the awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

World Autism Awareness day is one of only seven official health-specific UN Days. In 2018, the focus of this international day is “Empowering Women and Girls with Autism”. Moreover, there are various Autism-friendly events and educational activities held on every month and the main motto of these events to increase understanding and acceptance and foster worldwide support about Autism.

Autism is a neurological disorder that is exhibits during the first three years of life. It affecting the functions of brain and it persists lifelong although symptoms may improve over time. According to scientists, it may be caused with genetic or environmental factors and there is no rehabilitate for Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) but speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, educational support, and a number of other interventions are the various treatments that may help the children and their parents. For the past years, UN has focused on a specific theme for the World Autism Awareness Day. These all themes are:

  • 2013 – “Celebrating the ability within the disability of autism”
  • 2012 – “Launch of Official UN “Awareness Raising” Stamp”

In 2019, we are going to celebrate the twelfth annual World Autism Awareness Day. It is coupled by international community, thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world.

Furthermore, the WAAD activities and events are planned every year to further increase and develop world knowledge of children and adults.
