UN Russian Language Day : The UN Russian Language Day is celebrated world over on 06 June.

History

Russian holds a great level of importance and significance as the United Nations considers and uses it as one of the six official languages. The day was started by UNESCO in the year 2010. The language makes use of certain difficult alphabets which pose a challenge for the learners to understand, and it is for this purpose, that a day is observed to highlight its cultural importance in today’s age.

Significance

The day coincides with the birthday of a renowned Russian poet whose contribution to the language has been immense.  He is Aleksandr Pushkin whose birthday is celebrated on June 6 and is famous as a father of modern Russian literature. His immense contribution for developing and strengthening multilingualism and cultural diversity has been rightly understood and observed to be one of the golden times which highlights and signifies the culture.

Importance

The main purpose and objective is to highlight and signify the richness of the Russian language. It is true that every single language brings with itself its own specific approach towards celebrating the richness of the language. This is done through inviting renowned poets along with writers who sensitize about the greatness associated with the language.

If the strength of the native Russian speakers in the world is considered, then there are over 150 million of them. Due to the number of people who speak the language in Europe, it has easily made itself to be the most spoken language there.

While, talking about non-native Russian speakers, they are approximately 113 million.

·        Russian is also known as the “International Language of Space”. The reason for the same is that astronauts are required to learn it while they are on an expedition to an international space station.

The day is a proud witness to various events which take place in New York, Vienna and Geneva. In order to create a long lasting impression, there are discussions as well as theatrical performances highlighting the language.

The regions or areas which speak Russia as well as the staff associated with Russian embassy take part in various activities and events. The main objective is to reflect the richness associated with the language and this is done through museum exhibits as well as lectures given on the contributions of Aleksandr Pushkin. The event also brings together fans of the writer who converge at one place where they pay homage to the writer by reading his stories and poems.

What can one do?

In order to commemorate the event, one can show willingness to learn and understand Russian language or its phrases.
