India gained freedom from the Britishers after doing a long struggle on 15 August, 1947. Unfortunately, this independence did not come along with democracy and the rights with which people can choose their own government.

Even after independence, India didn’t have its own constitution and it was still under the rule of King George VI. However, finally on January 26, 1950, Indian constitution came into effect and became one of the biggest democracies in the world. This was the day when India got declared as socialist, sovereign, secular, and democratic republic.

HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE OF REPUBLIC DAY

As discussed above, even after gaining independence from the British rule, India was still under the constitutional monarchy of Earl Mountbatten (Governor General) and King George VI (Head). The reason was that during the time of independence, India did not have the constitution of its own. All the laws implemented at that time in India were based on the Government Act of 1935.

A drafting committee was made, in which Dr. Bheem Rao Ambedkar was appointed as the chairman, after realising the need to have Indian constitution. The major objective of this committee was to draft Indian constitution. The constitution containing all the fundamental political code, structures, procedures, powers, duties of all the government institutions, and also the fundamental rights and duties of Indian citizens was made.

The committee worked hard for many months and finally on 4th November, 1947, they submitted their first draft on constitution to the Constituent Assembly. However, it took approximately two and half years to finally adopt the constitution by doing the necessary amendments.

Although, on 26 November, 1949, the Indian constitution was adopted but it became formally effective on January 26, 1950. The constitution of India included 8 schedules and 395 articles in it. After this, elections were held for the first time in Indian history and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first person to become the president of free India.

Dr. Prasad took an Oath in the Government house at the Durban Hall. He also unrolled the Indian flag at the Stadium for the very first time. This transformation of India into becoming a sovereign and democratic country has become an historical event. Today, India has the largest constitution in the world.

Magnificent parades by the regiments of Navy, Indian Army, Air Force, and Police marches on this occasion at Rajpath, in Delhi. On this event India’s Defence power is also displayed with latest aircrafts, weapons, and missiles. Many skyshows are also performed by the Indian Air Force on this auspicious occasion.
