PHOSPHOROUS AND ITS FUNCTION IN THE BODY

Phosphorous is an important mineral and its function in the body plays an important role in every tissue. Phosphorous is present as an phosphate in bone, teeth, as phosphates in soft tissues and body fluids. Phosphorous and its function in the body should be known to everyone so that one can keep himself healthy and keep himself away from its deficiency diseases. About 85% of phosphorus is present in bones and teeth to provide  strength and structure. Phosphorus and its function helps regulating PH in the body.

PHOSPHOROUS AND ITS FUNCTION IN THE BODY

FUNCTIONS:-

  1. Mineralization of bones and teeth.
  2. Phosphorus is needed for the formation of phospholipids which is important part of cell structure.
  3. Maintains acid base balance and acts as buffer.
  4. Components of many body compounds. Eg:- ATP, ADP, enzymes, DNA, RNA.
  5. Phosphorous regulates acid base balance.

ABSORPTION:-

Phosphorous  is absorbed in the blood with the help of vitamin D which means vitamin D is also a very important component which plays a important role  in  phosphorous absorption and its functions in the body. The total body phosphorous is maintained by absorption at GIT and excretion by kidneys.

DEFICIENCY:-

Because of wide spread distribution of phosphorous but particularly high in protein rich foods. Deficiency Phosphorus is rarely found in humans. The RDA of phosphorous for children and adults is equal to (1:1). Some disease affects absorption of phosphorous (such as diabetes or Crohn’s disease)which leads to abnormal development of bones and teeth.Intake of  calcium and phosphorous should be in same proportion. some time we intake too much phosphorous in regular diet but along with that if we miss calcium than this situation will lead to bone abnormalities and will affect its normal function in the body.

On other side if there is high level of phosphorous  in blood and it may combine with calcium to form deposition in soft tissues like muscles. It occur in people with severe kidney disease and severe abnormality in calcium regulation. Rickets is due to the deficiency of vitamin D.

SOURCES:-

All foods contain significant amounts of phosphorus but particularly high in protein rich foods Eg:- Meat, Fish, Poultry and dairy products. Cereals are primary source of phosphorous in the average diet.

About 85% of phosphorus is present in bones and teeth to provide  strength and structure. Phosphorus and its function helps regulating PH in the body.
