Facts about the mother languages:
- Among 6000 languages across the world, 43% fall under the endangered category.
- In the different education systems of nations, only a few hundred mother languages have got a place in schools.
- In the digital world, the count of the used languages is limited to only a hundred or lesser languages.
- 40% of the global population is not able to access education in their mother tongue that they understand and speak fluently.
- Every fortnight, a language gets disappeared and takes away the culture, customs, rituals, and heritage associated with it.
To promote cultural and linguistic diversity across the globe, we celebrate the world’s mother language day since 2000. We all should understand that different heritages can merely be preserved with the existence of languages. The way global development is essential for us, it is also needed for us to try for the development of our languages that are limited to a specific region or endangering.
Background of the international mother language day:
In November 1999, UNESCO made a proclamation to celebrate international mother language day by conducting a General Conference. The resolution A/RES/56/262 of 2002 was responsible for the successful proclamation that was headed through the UN General Assembly. Proceeding further, the UN General Assembly called upon Members of states to promote and preserve every language used by individuals across the world in its resolution A/RES/61/266.
Under the same resolution, another proclamation was made by the UN General Assembly in 2008 to promote unity in diversity, and then 2008 was considered a special International Year of Languages. With this, multilingualism not only got promoted but people got aware of the importance of the preservation of languages. In the same context, various strategies and policies were adopted by different organizations to favor diversity in languages.
When linguistic diversity threatening was at its peak, then came the international mother language day in existence. People began comprehending that language is the fundamental way to communicate and it leads to development in human societies. The languages are the doors to the various sectors of society.
All-in-all, we all should comprehend that languages play a major role in ensuring development and cultural diversity. Therefore, we should do extra efforts to preserve the languages and attaining quality education for everybody.
