International Migrants Day

International Migrants Day is celebrated on 18th December. It is celebrated for increasing number of migrants in the world. The UN General Assembly, taking into account the increasing number of migrants in the world, declared 18 December as International Migrants Day. This decision of celebrating International Migrants Day was taken by UN General Assembly on 4 December 2000.

This day (International Migrants Day) is celebrated in various countries, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations/Institutions. This Day (International Migrants Day) is celebrated to protect rights, Fundamental freedom of all Migrant Workers and Members of their families. Migrants also plays an special role in country. Migrants also work for the development of country.  Member states are trying there best  to overcome the challenges of irregular migration.

It is well said by the the Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon :- “Migration is an expression of the human aspiration for dignity, safety and a better future. It is part of the social fabric, part of our very make-up as a human family,”

What is Migration?

Migration of human  is the movement of people from one place in the world to another place for the purpose of taking up permanent or semipermanent residence, usually across a political boundary. Semipermanent residence is the seasonal movement if migrant farm laborers, etc.

There are eight types of migrations.

Types of Migration

1) Voluntary migration :- People when choose to move than it is voluntary migration.

2)Involuntary migration :- When people are forced to move than it is involuntary migration.

3) Internal Migration :- When people moving to a new home within a state, country, or continent.

4) External Migration :- When people moving to a new home in a different state, country, or continent.

5) Emigration :- People leaving one country  and  moving to another country .

6) Immigration :- People moving into a new country Or Coming to new country .

7) Population Transfer :- When a government forces a large group of people out of a region, usually based on ethnicity or religion. This is also known as an involuntary or forced migration  as explained above in 1st point.

8) Impelled Migration (“reluctant” or “imposed” migration) :- Individuals are not forced out of their country, but people leave their country because of unfavorable situations such as warfare, political problems, or religious persecution.
