HISTORY:

Since 1992, World disabled day has been celebrated to promote encouragement and acceptance of disability issues and to provide support for the self-respect, rights, and better living of disabled persons. It also strengthens the increased awareness of profits to be taken from the association of persons with disabilities. Moreover, this day solely focuses on altogether a new and unique issue every year.

The United Nations General assembly recognized 981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons. This resulted in the creation of a plan of action at the National, domestic and international levels with a focus on equalization of opportunities, rehabilitation, and prevention of disabilities. The theme of World Disabled Day was “full participation and equality” which can be defined as the right of people with various disabilities to participate in the life and development of the different societies, so that they can live their life to the fullest as equivalent to other citizens of the country, and have an equal share in benefits resulting from the growth of social and economic development.

The General Assembly declared 1983-1992 as the United Nations decade of disabled persons to provide a target to the Government and organizations for implementing the activities recommended in the World Program of action.

This year, the main program will be held in New York which will include opening, panel discussion, and cultural events. It seeks to increase awareness among people regarding the rights and equality for disabled people as well in society.
