The story of the international day of happiness begins in the year 2011 when a resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly when happiness was considered a fundamental human goal. The resolution called for an equitable, inclusive, and balanced approach to grow economically while promoting the happiness and well-being of everyone. In the next year, the very first UN conference took place in which the UN General Assembly adopted another resolution to celebrate International Day of Happiness annually. For the very first time, it was celebrated in the year 2013. Since then, all 193 nations of the world have adopted the resolution to make happiness their priority πŸ™‚

Typically, UN General Assembly took a resolution 66/281 on 12th July of 2012 when the members realized that the lives of human beings are gradually losing the moments of well-being and happiness. Thus, they made policies to make happiness a universal goal so that sustainable development, poverty eradication, and happiness of every individual become the priority of nations worldwide. The credit of initiation goes to Bhutan that realized the importance of national happiness over national income. Since the beginning of the 1970s, the country adopted Gross National Happiness as a major goal over Gross National Product. With their efforts, the International Day of Happiness has become an important day in the lives of everyone across the whole globe.

In the year 2013, the first international day of happiness was celebrated across the world when a plethora of events took place including the celebration of 100s of “Happy Heroes”. These are typically such communities that do a lot to bring happiness to the lives of others.

In 2014, a happiness campaign was organized when people were asked to share authentic images of things that make them happy πŸ™‚ . With this, the motive was to make people reclaim happiness. We often get bombarded with fake commercial images due to which we forget to reclaim happiness moments but this campaign made thousands of people share images due to which social reach was almost 13 million across the globe πŸ™‚
