International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing : June 5 is observed as the day to fight against illegal fishing. The day holds a global significance on the menace associated with the same. The exercise is observed everywhere in the world which poses a serious problem and challenge for the survival of the fishes. Sadly, the ones who are dependent on fisheries for food and jobs really have to bear the brunt.
After all, fisheries give the emphatic reason of providing employment, boosting the business of trade, enhancing the economy while proving to be an important source of food as well. The population of the world is constantly growing where fisheries provide food security. However, on a pleasant note there are concerns and insecurities which have naturally raised in spite of the serious efforts undertaken by the international community to ensure sustainability of fisheries. Due to illegal malpractices, there have been various unreported and unregulated fishing activities which have posed serious concerns today.
International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing
The data by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization has some startling revelations where illegal and irresponsible activities have created a huge loss of 11-26 tones of fish annually. This puts an additional burden on the economy and it is estimated at US$ 10-23 billion. This is a huge loss.
In order to check the growing menace and to contain the illegal practice, the UN General Assembly has appealed to the international community to effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing along with ending such destructive practices which is making the world economy hollow. Hence, in order to sensitize the masses, the UN General Assembly allotted June 5 as an “International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing”.
The main objective which the day holds is obviously to draw the attention of the world to the increasing threats posed by IUU fishing activities. It is equally to showcase the importance and relevance of the efforts needed to fight the ongoing illegal activities happening as of now.
It was on 5 June 2018 that the International Day for the fight against IUU was celebrated for the first time. The day naturally holds greater significance as over 820 million people directly depend on fisheries and the international efforts speak volumes about the extent of efforts needed to address the issue.
What is IUU fishing?
IUU fishing is the term used for illegal fishing related practices being carried out and these practices go against national, regional as well as international laws. It can better be understood and addressed in the form of non- reporting as well as misreporting on fishing operations. Hence, these practices are usually carried continuously without the knowledge of concerned authorities as it creates a huge loss.
The day brings attention from the global community to do something in this regard with an aim so that proper sensitization can be done. Naturally, the lurking dangers and threats are huge which are due to IUU fishing activities as it hinders the efforts of the concerned authorities and masses who are working towards fighting the menace.
Educational events and programs take place as they make everyone aware about the importance and significance of the day.
