International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action : April 4 signifies the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. This is part of the sensitization process where the General Assembly on 8th December, 2005 specified the date.

This in the wake of war-torn countries where mines and other explosives of war still pose a looming threat to the health, safety and lives of civilians amongst various countries of the world. This directly poses a serious threat to the social and economic development of the affected countries and creates an impediment to the progress on local as well as national level.

United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is an agency which has been selflessly working towards the affected people who have either been affected or are quite prone to the dangers of the explosive hazards. They have been a part of this humanitarian mission for over 20 years now.

UNMAS is progressing with an aim to safeguard the lives of people.

  •         It vouches to work for the cause of refugees by supporting them in their voluntary return out of the displaced places internally
  •         To enhance the deployment of UN mission
  •         To ensure the practical implementation of the humanitarian assistance
  •         To help towards implementing laws such as human rights law and international humanitarian law with the sole idea of safeguarding the interests of the affected.
  •         There is a dire need for advocating laws on international level to protect civilians from the threats of landmines and explosive remnants of war.

In April 2015, popular celebrity Daniel Craig was appointed as the first UN Global Advocate for Elimination of Mines and Explosive Hazards by the UN Secretary-General.

Mr. Craig goes amidst the public with an aim to carry the vision of United Nations forward which is basically to ensure a world that is free of the threats posed by mines as well as explosive hazards

Secondly, he is also playing the role of sensitizing masses by advocating for mobilizing resources for the UN Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action

The United Nations Headquarter is a witness every year to the multimedia exhibition (Organized by UNMAS) which is basically done with an aim to sensitize masses about the mine related dangers along with explosives as they cause harm to the inhabitants.

UNMAS makes the use of photo exhibition to sensitize people about the need of replacing minefields with playing ground as this not only bridges the gap created by communities but will also aware people about the victims as well as survivors of war.

It is important to clear the land from explosive hazards after doing a thorough and detailed survey so that fresh development can start. Yes, the war torn barren land can be converted into paddy fields where crops such as wheat can be grown and cultivated.

The UNMAS is collaborating with civil society, international organizations etc to make this a reality, so that the sufferings from the world can be minimized. Additionally, the world becomes a happy and beautiful place to live in for those “less fortunate”.
