International Day for Abolition of Slavery (UNO) :
Slavery refers to such exploitation conditions that an individual cannot refuse or leave because of threats, coercion, deception, violence and abuse of power. Many attempts were made by different leaders and social workers to eradicate slavery but it still exists in many forms even today. Officially on 2nd December 1949, The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery was initiated by United Nations General Assembly.

HISTORY:
On 2nd December of every year, the whole globe celebrates the international day for the abolition of slavery that was adopted by the General assembly, of the United Nations Convention for the suppression of the traffics in persons and the Exploitation of Prostitution of others. The focus of this day is to eradicate contemporary forms such as trafficking in people, sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labor, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict. The forms of Slavery has evolved and manifested in different ways over some time. In today’s times, some old and traditional forms of slavery still exist in their earlier forms, while some have changed into new forms.
Some common forms of slavery that exist over a long time are:
- FORCED LABOUR – Traditional forms of forced labor have now changed into contemporary forms of forced labor where migrant workers are exploited economically in almost every sector.
- CHILD LABOUR – As a matter of fact, more than 150 million children are subject to child labor, accounting for almost one in ten children globally.
- HUMAN TRAFFICKING – The human trafficking term refers to a form of sexual exploitation, where people are forced for labor or services. It includes slavery or practices identical to slavery, along with the removal of organs.
FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT SLAVERY:
1 An estimate suggests that about 40.3 million people are involved in the modern slavery that includes 24.9 as a part of forced labor and 15.4 million in forced marriage.
- Interestingly, there are 5.4 victims of modern slavery for every 1,000 people in the world.
- Globally, 1 in 4 victims of modern slavery are children.
- The forced labor affects a plethora of women accounting for 99% of victims in the commercial sex industry, and 58% in numerous other sectors.
WAYS TO CELEBRATE THE DAY:
- In rural areas, people should be made aware of the day by organizing special seminars for them on this day.
- NGOs can organize some kind of awareness campaigns for people who are completely illiterate by making them aware of their rights in an easy way.
- Social media can be used to promote awareness among people as everybody uses it these days.
