History

The black day is associated with the year 2015 when over 70 people were massacred which left many injured. Tanzania has experienced the worst of human right violations where people with albinism faced violent attacks and were even murdered.

The superstition behind the deadly attacks has been due to the belief that people with albinism consisted of magical powers. Hence, the intention of the attackers was to kill them so that their parts can be used in certain witchcraft. Due to the heart-rending incident, it is the Tanzania Albinism Society including other NGOs which advocated for the rights of people with albinism.

Due to the widest possible scale of sensitization process, it resulted in celebrating the first Albino Day on May 4, 2006. The official stamp of the day finally happened as the UN’s General Assembly proclaimed June 13, as International Albinism Awareness Day as it passed a resolution on December 18, 2014.

What is albinism?

Albinism is a non-contagious and rare disease where both the parents carry the gene to pass it on the offspring. It is not necessary that they have traits and characteristics of albinism themselves.

Medical Issues

The most obvious characteristic related with albinism is the lack of pigmentation in hair, eyes and skin which makes the sufferer vulnerable to sun along with sharp light. Therefore, the seriousness associated with the problem relates to how most of the sufferers have little or no vision and pose a serious problem of developing skin related cancer.

One in 20,000 people across the world suffer from albinism. The disease has got comparably greater effect and relevance in parts of Africa. Since, as per the data, in South Africa, one in four people suffer with the same. While the condition in Tanzania is less startling where one in 1,400 experience the genetic condition. Unfortunate part is that Albinism is not clearly comprehended medically as well as socially.

Social Issues

Due to poor sensitization, there still has to be a long way for people to stop bullying or target the sufferers. Since, they are highly discriminated against. The unfortunate incidents of various families abandoning their babies or being rejected create a sorry state of affairs.
