Meaning of adjective (Adjective Definition with examples):-An adjective is a word that qualifies a noun or pronoun.

E.g:-

  • Neha  is good player.
  • She is intelligent.

1. Adjective of qualityAdjectives that show the kind and quality of person or thing.

e.g: An honest man.

    Adjective of quality is used in two ways :-

  • Attributive use :- When an adjective is used before noun,it is said to be used attributively.

E.g :

Rama was a wise king.(noun)

Here wise is used before a noun (king) so it is attributive

  • Predicative use – When an adjective is used after verb ,it is said to be used predicatively.

e.g : The climate is pleasant .

2. Proper adjective –An adjective which is formed from proper noun is called proper adjective .

E.g :Buddhist monastery ,British rule.

Here “Buddhist” and “British’ are proper adjectives.

3. Adjective if quantity -An adjective that show how much of a thing is meant .

E.g :Some milk ,enough ,sufficient,no manner

Here some, enough, sufficient, no are adjective of quantity.

4. Adjective of number -An adjective that shows how many persons or things are meant or in order a person or stands.

Adjective of number

It is two types-

  • Definite
  • Indefinite

    Definite –That denotes an exact number .

E.g: five boys ,third row.

 Indefinite – That does not  denote an exact number.

    E.g : few boys ,several girls.

Cardinal Adjective :-Definite number like one two three four are cardinal adjective.

E.g :

  • She has two pen .
  • She has two books .

 Ordinal Adjective – Definite order like first ,second ,last are ordinal adjectives.

E.g :

  • The first chapter of this book is noun.

NOTE:- When both ordinal or cardinal adjective come in a sentence ,they are in the order “oc”. This means first ordinal than cardinal.

E.g :We will revise the lesson in the last two classes.

5) Demonstrative Adjective –The adjective that points out which person or thing is meant.

E.g:This boy,that group,these people,those countries.

NOTE:-If this,that,these or those are immediately followed by a noun, these words are called,demonstrative  adjectives and if these words are immediately followed by a verb ,these words are known as  demonstrative pronouns.

E.g:

  1. This boy is good .
  2. That pen is new.
  3. These shirt are black.

6) Distributive Adjective –The Adjective which refer to each one of the number is known as distributive adjective .

E.g :

  • Each candidates is honest .
  •  Every boy is present today .

Note :- If each ,every ,either or neither is immediately followed by noun,it is known as Distributive Adjective and if each ,every ,either or neither is followed by some other word ,it is known as Distributive Pronouns.

E.g :

  • Distributive Adjective      

        Each boy took the test.

  • Distributive pronoun

      Each of the boys took the test.

7) Interrogative Adjective – What, which and whose are interrogative adjectives  which they are used with a noun.

E.g :

  • Which room is here?
  • Whose book is this?       

NOTE :- If  what , which, whose is followed by a noun, these words are interrogative adjectives and if it is followed by a verb, it is known as interrogative pronoun.

8) Possessive Adjective – Adjective that shows possession.

  E.g: My book ,our class

COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVE

  • An adjective comes in three degree – positive ,comparative and superlative degree.
  • Positive degree denotes the quality of a person ,thing,or group .it is used when no camparison is made.

E.g: He is a good girl.

  • When two thingsor sets of things are compared,comparative degree is used.

E.g: He is better than you.

  • Superlative degree is used to choose one out of a group or many .

E.g:He is best student of my class .
